O'Grady was born in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving into Los Angeles. O'Grady began her career modelling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered the main character in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first leading role on ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. O'Grady as the long-haired, secretariat character from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress.
